Categorizing My Music & MindMapping Ideas

Last year I started sharing my goals on my blog as another way to keep myself accountable. So far it’s helped, with reaching goals as well as fine tuning them. So I’ve decided to continue on with it. This wont be a very long post as I only have 2 goals this month. 1) Start Organizing & Cataloging My Music 1000 songs is a lot to go through and it’s my goal to organize and categorize them all this year, and the best way get that done is by pacing myself. A little, a little there, until I get it complete. I think I can complete 250 tracks a month. Sounds like a lot, but If you break it down it really isn’t. It averages out to around 10 tracks or songs a day. This includes: meta tags, description, genre etc. Whatever I can do to make the licensing process ease → just all out organization. This part of the process is data entry, but luckily for me, I made life easier on my self by sticking with few genres and templates during the creation process. So most things will just need to be reworded rather than completely written from scratch.  2) Mind Map Content Ideas (For Site) For those who may be unaware, MindMapping is my main method of organization. There isn’t anything I do that hasn’t been mapped at some point and time. I have all these ideas about what I want to do with the site and where I want it to go → it’s just one huge brain dump, so now, I have to sit down and create a “step by step” action plan otherwise these ideas will go to waste. 3) Finalize Contracts & Negotiations (Projects) There were some projects that spilled over in 2014. This happens a lot, especially when you start talking with clients late in the year. The plan is wrap all that up this month and move on. So far, this week, I’ve collected a few up front payments, as negotiated. Still waiting on a couple emails/Skype chats, just a few loose ends that need to be tied up before moving forward. For example → one project I’m working on is a video game and I need a “playable” beta version this way I can see how my sound/music interacts with the game (and gameplay). Without the “beta” or some video of the game play, it’s a little hard to build around the game 🙁 4.) Field Recording Between the hours of 1am – 2am (every morning) I’ll be standing on a popular street corner like a cheap hooker, with a portable recording setup recording passbys. These are good times because traffic is very minimal and there are some pretty nice cars that like to race around these times 🙂 If I’m lucky, I’ll get a few to rev their engines and honk their horns while stopped at red lights 🙂 Simple, yet obtainable goals.  ...

Music Business: Goals For December 2013

Music Business: Goals For December 2013

Every month I layout my business goals for the month. This is not for bragging rights, it’s just a way to keep me moving forward and hold me accountable. Here the goals I have mapped out for December 2013. Feel free to ask questions and leave comments in the comment section below the post. 1000 Tracks (Final Month) This is the last month to get the rest of these tracks complete. I’m not sure if I’ll stick with the same formula this month. I might relax and do the bare minimum – just hit 1000 and leave it at that. Am I slacking? Eh, yea maybe, but I hey, I think I’m entitled to it 🙂   Logic Pro X I’m getting there, still lots to learn. I feel I’m becoming pretty fluent with the application. In fact, I’ll be making my last few tracks this month using nothing but Logic X. I’m finally at a point where I can open logic and lay something down in 30 minutes. Might not be much to logic heads, but definitely a huge accomplishment for me because that’s the workflow I have with Reason. Open the program and Go!   Google+ Hangouts & Podcast I’ve been having mixed feelings. I’m not sure if I should do a Podcast, Hangouts or both. I did some testing with a friend of mine, and I like what Google+ has to offer I just need to learn or test a few more things before I take the plunge. As of right now I just use it for small group sessions I hold for my subscribers, but the goal is to host public meetings and hangouts in the near future. As far as the podcast goes. I’m looking for a good host and proper organization. I’m still recording sessions and hope to launch February 2014.   Sound Design Projects Closed 2 deals on the 26th, and was contracted for another the exact same day. This new project will put me my comfort zone – subtractive synthesis. I can’t speak on much about the project or the company, but I’ll basically be creating patches for a few synth applications. What’s cool about these projects is, not only do you get paid, but you also get to keep the applications. Well, most of the time you do. Some companies will confine you to a demo version, but most will give you all access.   Music Licensing 90 Day Challenge Music placement updates – Oh my, do I have a lot to share. I’ve gotten a few emails asking about this challenge and placements I’ve landed. The updates are coming; I’ve just been a little busy with projects and what not. We’ll get back in the swing of things 1st week of December. Ps – Follow the 90 Day Challenge here   MasterMind Meeting This was not a good month for my master mind. I had a few issues with a relative and then Thanksgiving. So, we’re going to strive for a couple meetings in December. I like masterminds, because it’s a good way to stay productive and it’s always nice to bounce ideas off someone and to have someone to rant with. Sure, you can rant to anyone, but it’s different when it’s with someone who’s in the...

Music Business: Goals For November 2013

Music Business: Goals For November 2013

October has been a great month, got a lot accomplished, here’s what I’ll be aiming for in the month of November Diy Music Biz – Podcast I’m not sure if that’ll be the name, but I’m working on it. I was able to record 3 more episodes in October as well as clean up and edit a few that I recorded earlier in the year. Aside from recording more episodes, I still need graphics and proper structure for the podcast. I also need to think about the longevity of the podcast. Is this something I can see myself doing on a consistent basis or is it something I just want to toy around with? Ideally, I’d like to jump in for the long haul because for me, it’s easier to carry on a conversation for 45 minutes than it is creating posts. I dunno, we’ll see how it all pans out.   Creating Music Cues The end of the year is near and I’m really close to reaching my goal. This month I’m going to keep it simple and focus on cheesy sounding music. I’m starting to hear a lot used in commercials and ads. When I say “cheesy” I’m talking about the sound selection. This will be easy as most of reason’s stock “un-tweaked” has a bit of a cheesy sound to it, the korg triton has a cheesy stock sound as well. I’m not going for innovation, going for what works.   Sound Design Projects It’s been a roller coaster, but worth it. On 1 hand, there’s a few clients who know exactly what they want and are really easy to work with. Then, there are 2 clients who are the exact opposite. They’re all over the place, changing the game plan, extending deadlines etc. I’m fine with the change, but at the same time, it requires me to start over with each change. A year ago I probably would have ask for another payment and may have even dropped the project all together, but the way I see it, this is just more source material for a bigger project so…We can dance for as long as we need to.   Master Mind – Another Way Of Staying Focused I’ll explain this later on   Maschine Studio – It’s A Beast I was able to get my hands on Maschine Studio a little early. I’m impressed with the new features and i’m considering tossing it into the mix with Logic X. I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to use it, but I’ll figure it out. What I’m really stoked about is the workflow. The 2.0 update is nice, but it work so much better when you use it with the new controller.   Logic Pro X – It’s A Great Daw I’m still tinkering around with templates, trying to get a good workflow down. As of today I’ve created 7 cues using nothing but Logic x. There’s still a lot of ground to cover, but I’m making great progress. One thing I’m having a hard time understanding is why people dislike Logic x. Am I missing something? What are the issues and should I be concerned about them as I dive into film...

Music Business Goals: October 2013

Music Business Goals: October 2013

Here’s are my goals for October 2013. I really enjoy adding these updates. I recently ran the analytics on these posts and right now there aren’t many views, but I’m sure that will change as I continue to add more updates. It’s more like a revised “to do list” if you think about it. I Mind Map everything: Goals, plans and ideas etc. Sharing these goals is just another way to stay focused and on top of things… Keep them burned in the mind.   Still Working With Logic X Pro I’m still working with Logic, falling in love with it more and more. I’ve been thinking about swapping out some plugins. Notice I sad “swap” and not “add”, so I’m sticking to my word, keeping myself inline by keeping it thin when it comes to the plugins. Templates are coming along, still a little bit of work to do in that area, but coming along.   Project Blueprint For Beginning Of The Year I need to set myself up for the beginning of the year. This generally consists of me running through my list of connections. I landed a pretty nice gig mid last month, one that will allow me to pretty much do whatever I want sound wise. It’s going to take a month or so to get up to speed with the workflow, but it’ll be worth it. I’ll ask what I can and can not share on my blog as there was a pretty strict NDA. Probably one of the most strict I’ve signed.   Create Create CREATE I’m getting really close to that 1000 track goal I set at the beginning of the year. It was a huge new years resolution for me and one that I was a little reluctant to do, but hey I’m doing it. I felt there was 1 of 2 things that would happen, 1) I’d hit the goal and have lots of material to send off and build from or 2) I’d fail and still have a good number of tracks on hand. Still a win win in my eyes. Right now I’m sitting on exactly 788 music cues. If I keep going at the rate I’m going I’ll have a total of 1,064. I’m excited about this because I can crush the goal or I can pull off a little and spend time doing other things. I can’t predict the future, hopefully things don’t get out of control, but if they do, I’ll have a  little wiggle room. Let’s talk about my huge stressor of last month (the sound design projects) Oh man, I was so stressed about these projects, but I was able to pull through. 1 project’s deadline was pushed to November which gave me plenty of time for everything else. Clients were really easy to work with, that alone makes the workload easier imo. A good % of what was needed I already had on my hard drives. There were a few things that needed some tweaking, but that’s nothing compared to starting from scratch and then having to revise later.   Starting A Podcast I like talking a lot more than I do typing. I’ve always wanted to start a podcast and I think I’m going to move a little closer toward...

Music Business: Goals For September 2013

Here are my goals for September 2013. As stated last month, this is something I’ll be doing on a monthly basis as I feel it’s a great accountability measure. Goals always look good when you write them down, but when you share them with others, it puts you in a position where you have to be accountable. So, that’s the idea and all, but I think I may have bit off a little more than I can handle     Free Membership Program I’m still working on it, I know this was on my goal sheet last month, but I just wasn’t able to complete it, sorry about that. I’m having trouble figuring out how I want to deliver it because I want it to be something good and not just slapped together. Aside from that I ran into new project(s) which you can read about here. With new projects comes paper work, revisions, meetings etc. The membership section will be coming this month you have my word, thanks for being patient. Please help me motivate others by sharing this post TWEET   Logic Pro X: Still Messing With It Keep diving into Logic X. My transition has been slow mainly because I’m finding that the templates I had and ‘Propellerheads Reason’ are little hard to convert. Most of the templates I had we’re mixing templates which were based around songs I remade and in order to convert those into logic I basically have to do an entire remix. Some of the Templates are very easy to bring over, but my goal for this month is just to keep hacking away at it until i get it done.   Meet More Industry Professionals I stated that I wanted to find two music supervisors for the month of August. I didn’t find 2 music supervisors, but instead, I found two film directors and one music supervisor which I was a perfectly fine with. I went to guitar center to look at the unit called Push which is made by Ableton and as I was demoing Push a guy came over and mentioned that he worked with someone that used it and was thinking about purchasing. I was telling him the same thing, I was thinking about purchasing it and one thing led to another. You know when you’re demoing gear and someone sparks a convo and it leads to “oh, well what do you do” turns out he was director and was working on a small documentary. Well, we spoke for about 30 minutes and his girlfriend came and told him she was ready go. She was also an indie film director. So we all shook hands and plugged each others information into our Smart, intellectual mobile, interweb devices. The music supervisor I met was a music library owner who emailed me to comment on a video I titled “Music Libraries A Stealing”   Create More Music As I stated at the beginning of the year, the goal is to submit 1000 music cues to libraries and music supervisors etc. This month I might have to do something a little different. I might have to break routine *GASP* I have a lot going on this month: projects, daw configuration, updating my website, tutorials, life…. What I fear is being totally consumed by...

Music Business: Goals For August 2013

Music Business: Goals For August 2013

Here’s a little experiment I want to try. Each month I’m going to share an outline or blurb on my music business plans. I feel doing this will not only help keep me accountable and focused, but it’ll also provide some inspiration to the readers of this site (hopefully).   Create 90 Music Cues 3 cues a day, I’ve been doing this consistently since the beginning of the year (roughly). I’m still surprised by the amount of negative emails I’ve receive about my work-flow – At least 10 a day (at least)   Find New Musical Inspiration I thrive off inspiration. Without it, making 3 tracks a day would be impossible. There’s no way I’d be able to do this consistently without good sources of inspiration.   Meet 2 Music Supervisors Majority of my placements come from music libraries and while they’re great assets, I find myself growing a little tired of them. I tend get better (more targeted) leads and projects when working directly with music supervisors because they are connected with project. Director – Music Supervisor – Music library – Music creator(s) Director – Music Supervisor ← Music creator Just 1 less layer to go through when working directly with a supervisor. There are a few I work with on a regular, but I need to reach out and build a bigger network.   Record 500 New Sounds I made a list of goals to accomplish this year (New Years Resolution) and getting more familiar with my field recording equipment was one of them. Right now I’m working with the following:Yes, these are affiliate links Tascam DR40 Zoom H1 Zoom H2n Fostex FR2 Le Rode NTG1 Shotgun Mic Good array of Condenser Mics MD7506 Headphones Rode Pistol Grip Wind Sock Mic cables To some 500 may sound like a lot, but it’s relatively low. I could easily record 200 sounds of my car within an hour. Quick example of what could be captured Closing the trunk Opening the truck Closing the hood Opening the hood Revving the engine Tires screeching Car horn Turn signals Gear shifting? Pass bys This looks like a short list, but there’s many sounds to be capture here, especially if I’m capturing sound from different perspectives.   Release Boom Bap Phonetics 2 I’ve been tossing this project on the back burner long enough. I’ll work on it for a bit, then a project comes long and I totally forget about it until a fan or friend inquires about project. It’s time to finalize it and move on.   Launch Free Membership Program I’ve been planning and working on this for a few months. Like the Boom Bap Phonetics project → Became back burner material. Being overwhelmed doesn’t help either. Lately, I’ve been juggling more projects than I can handle. I love what I do, but sometimes it can be a little much. Anyway, this program will launch August 2013  ...
